2026 Republican convention in Dallas: Bag policy, prohibited items and more

Attending the Republican midterm convention in Dallas? The two-day event will take place Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 9-10, at the American Airlines Center, amid heightened security in and around downtown Dallas. Here's what to know before you go. Clear bags made of clear plastic, vinyl or PVC are permitted if they do not exceed 12-by-6-by-12 inches, according to a U.S. Secret Service statement. Clear backpacks, fanny packs and cinch bags are allowed if they meet those dimensions. Attendees can also bring a one-gallon clear plastic bag. Small clutches or wallets no larger than 5-by-7-by-1 inches are permitted if they are carried separately from other bags, but the handle or strap must be shorter than 7 inches. According to Secret Service, items prohibited at the Republican convention include: Any bags larger than 5-by-7-by-1 inches are prohibited at the convention, which may include purses, duffel bags, backpacks and more. The Secret Service said the list is not exhaustive, and other items may still be prohibited at the discretion of the agency if evaluated as a potential threat.
