Gujar khan - The tehsil administration, in collaboration with the NGO Save the Trees, has launched a plan to relocate more than 500 mature trees that could be affected by the construction of two underpasses in Gujar Khan city. According to Khawaja Mazhar, CEO of Save the Trees, more than 500 mature and valuable trees planted along the median and parks alongside the Grand Trunk Road were at risk of being removed due to the development work. He said the local administration approached his organisation to safely uproot, relocate and replant the trees, and the process had already begun with the assistance of experts. Mr Mazhar said mature trees were an important environmental asset and played a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change. He said his organisation had helped save numerous trees across Pakistan, particularly centuries-old banyan and peepal trees, by relocating them to suitable locations. He cited the relocation of a peepal tree in Missa Kaswal and the restoration of a huge fallen banyan tree along the GT Road near Mandra a few years ago as examples of the organisation's efforts. He added that Save the Trees also raises an SOS alert whenever a mature tree is threatened with being felled. Assistant Commissioner Gujar Khan Khizar Zahoor Goraya said the administration, with the assistance of retired Brigadier Ejaz Qamar, had engaged Save the Trees for the task. He said preparatory work had begun to carefully dig out, preserve and relocate the trees to Shareef Park, Housing Scheme Park and other suitable locations. Tags:
