76-year-old killed in hit-and-run crash on SR 535

A 76-year-old Orlando man died early Monday morning after being struck by multiple vehicles while crossing State Road 535 in Orange County, prompting a search for a driver who allegedly fled the scene. The fatal collision occurred at around 6:04 a.m. on Monday, September 7, along S. Apopka Vineland Road (SR 535), just south of Palm Parkway, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. Investigators stated that the 76-year-old Orlando man was walking in a westerly direction across the southbound lanes of S. Apopka Vineland Road when he reportedly stepped into the path of a Nissan Altima traveling in the outside lane. The pedestrian was not in a marked crosswalk when the front right of the Altima struck him, according to the report. The initial impact propelled the man into the outside lane, where he was reportedly hit by the undercarriage of a southbound Nissan Cube. The 57-year-old male driver of the Altima informed troopers that a third vehicle, identified as a possible white SUV, also struck the pedestrian in the roadway. An FHP trooper noted that both the Nissan Cube and the white SUV continued traveling southbound after the collision. The Cube's driver, a 47-year-old man, later returned to the scene, where investigators allegedly observed undercarriage damage consistent with the crash. Paramedics transported the 76-year-old pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The occupants of both Nissan vehicles involved in the crash were not injured, according to the report.
