Man Fired ‘Multiple' Shots During SWAT Standoff On Lightfoot's Logan Square Block, Police Say

LOGAN SQUARE — An armed man barricaded himself inside of a house in Logan Square Monday, firing a weapon and causing an hours-long standoff with police. Witnesses and police at the scene told Block Club an armed man had taken refuge in a house in the 3400 block of West Wrightwood Avenue in Logan Square after a domestic disturbance brought police to the scene late Monday morning. At about 11:43 a.m. Monday, officers conducted a well-being check following reports of an altercation between a 75-year-old woman and a man, police said. When police arrived on the scene, the man pointed a rifle at officers before barricading himself inside the residence, and SWAT officers then responded to the scene, according to police. A police officer at the scene told Block Club the suspect released a hostage to first responders but was still refusing to leave the premises. Police negotiators could be heard pleading with a man to leave the house 'with his hands empty' for hours. The man remained barricaded for several hours, during which time he 'discharged firearms on multiple occasions,' police said. Two officers sustained minor injuries from fragmented rounds and a ballistic shield was also struck by gunfire, police said in a statement. Around 5 p.m., police deployed less-lethal weapons on the home. The SWAT emergency ended when the man was taken into custody at 4:57 a.m. Tuesday and transported to St. Mary's Hospital, police said. The 75-year-old woman was also transported to St. Mary's Hospital for observation and has since been released, police said. No other injuries were reported. Multiple weapons were recovered on scene. Police declined to answer questions about the man's relationship to the woman, the type of firearms deployed or the man's age, citing the ongoing investigation. Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lives on the block where the barricade situation unfolded. A stretch of North Kimball and West Wrightwood avenues were shut down and the CTA's No. 82 Kimball/Homan buses were temporarily rerouted during the incident, according to ABC 7. A neighbor familiar with the suspect said he was a caretaker for an older woman. The neighbor, who asked to stay anonymous for safety reasons, alleged the suspect was working on a personal project inside of the home. The suspect boarded himself into his home by nailing plywood boards to the inside of his window, police at the scene told Block Club. 'I've been surprised by how long the standoff has gone.
