Kolkata: Jadavpur Police Station has sent a letter to Jadavpur University (JU) vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee on September 2, demanding records for 18 specific students within five-days.
The information includes extensive background details for each named student, including their full name, enrolled course and department, year or semester of study, student ID or roll number, present and permanent addresses, registered mobile numbers, and email IDs.
The legal directive was issued under Section 94 of the BNSS as part of an ongoing investigation into the case which was registered on August 20 for assaulting fellow students.
The FIR involves a string of serious charges, invoking Sections 191(2), 190, 117(2), 109, 197(1)(d), and 353(1) of the BNS, read with Section 3(1)(r)(s) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The notice also cautioned the JU administration of legal action if they fail to comply with the notice.
A sources said, 'Among the 18 students, at least five students are affiliated with Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (
ABVP
) while majority are from the left organisations.' JU vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said, 'The details are being readied and will be send.
A senior officer of Kolkata police said after going through the CCTV footage shared by the university, they have identified some students and asked for their details from the university. 'We will send notices to them and ask them to appear before the investigating officer at the police station,' said a senior officer at Lalbazar.
