Reviving a nameplate is usually a marketing decision. Reviving this one is a technical claim. The original Audi A2 was an aluminum-bodied compact that chased efficiency harder than anything else in its class, lost money doing it, and became shorthand for a period when the company's engineering promises meant something. Audi has now put the badge on an electric hatchback and made the same argument in a different currency. The A2 e-tron uses less energy per mile than any car the company has ever built, and the numbers behind that claim hold up.
Audi quotes 12.8 kWh per 100 km on the WLTP cycle for the 140 kW version with the optional efficiency package, which works out to close to 4.9 miles per kWh. No series-production Audi has gone lower. The drag coefficient is 0.24, the best in Audi's compact range, and the company says aerodynamic work alone accounts for up to 0.9 kWh per 100 km of the savings.
Getting there was conventional engineering done thoroughly rather than any single breakthrough. The underbody is largely enclosed. A controllable cooling air intake shuts when the battery does not need airflow. Air curtains manage flow at the front, gap reducers close the space between the wheels and the wheel housings, and the door handles sit flush.
The efficiency package adds 19-inch aero wheels on low-rolling-resistance tires. Acoustic glass, revised mirrors and additional door seals deal with the wind noise all that slippery surfacing would otherwise generate.
One figure deserves more attention than it will get. Audi claims 89.6% charging efficiency at the wallbox for the 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, achieved through an adapted cooling strategy. Charging losses are electricity an owner pays for and never uses, and almost no manufacturer publishes the number at all.
Four power levels across three batteries, every one of them rear-wheel drive with a single permanent-magnet synchronous motor. The entry car pairs a 125-kW motor with a 52-kWh lithium iron phosphate pack, making 350 Nm, or 258 lb-ft, and covering 263 miles on the WLTP cycle, from €38,200. Moving to the 140-kW motor and the 61-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery brings 320 miles and a €41,900 starting price.
The 170 kW version with the 84 kWh nickel manganese cobalt pack is the distance champion at 401 miles, from €48,900. The 240 kW flagship uses that same battery for 391 miles at €51,200.
Note that Audi's United Kingdom material quotes a maximum of 397 miles rather than 401, which reflects a different homologation rather than a different car. Performance is deliberately unremarkable. The 240-kW model reaches 62 mph in 5.7 seconds and tops out at 124 mph. Everything below it takes between 7.0 and 8.8 seconds and is limited to 99 mph. This is not a car sold on acceleration, which is the entire point.
Direct current charging peaks at 183 kW. Audi quotes 14 minutes for the 52 kWh battery at up to 100 kW, and 25 minutes for the 61 kWh pack at up to 105 kW.
Bidirectional charging is standard rather than optional. Vehicle-to-Load works everywhere, letting the car run external equipment, and Vehicle-to-Home is supported in Germany, Austria and Switzerland through compatible direct current wall boxes, which turns the A2 e-tron into household energy storage. Fitting that as standard on the entry model in the range is a genuinely unusual decision.
The proportions sit between a compact hatchback and a small MPV, which is exactly where the original lived. A short nose runs into a heavily slanted windshield, the body is tall, and the roofline tapers into a Kammback with a two-part rear window. That split glass is the clearest visual quote from the 1999 car.
The headlights are split too. An upper element carries four configurable light signatures, while the main headlight functions sit lower, housed in a black panel.
At 170.1 inches long and 70.5 inches wide, the A2 e-tron is compact by any measure, comparable to a Kia EV3 or a Volkswagen ID.3 Neo. The wheelbase is the interesting number: 108.8 inches, identical to the considerably larger Q4 e-tron. That is what allows Audi to promise interior space out of proportion to the footprint.
Standard equipment is substantial for an entry model, covering the curved display, navigation, a reversing camera, wireless phone charging, bidirectional charging and Level 2 driver assistance spanning emergency brake assist, swerve assist, attention assist, adaptive cruise control and a parking system.
Audi is the first premium brand to fit the Fidlock magnetic fastening system as standard, a patented storage solution that holds items in place without straps or clips. An optional panoramic glass roof covers 17.2 square feet. Three equipment packages sit above the base car, named Tech, Tech Plus and Tech Pro.
The heat pump is a cost option, which is irritating at this money and on a car whose entire pitch is efficiency, since heat pumps are among the most effective ways to protect winter range.
The first A2 ran from 1999 to 2005 and remains one of the more interesting commercial failures in Audi's history. Its aluminum spaceframe was expensive to build, which meant the car lost money at the price the market would tolerate. Its aerodynamic shape divided opinion, and its rear spoiler sat at driver eye level and blocked the view rearward, a complaint that followed the car throughout its life.
The most famous version was the A2 3L, named not for engine displacement but for consuming three liters of diesel per 100 km, which made it one of the most economical production cars in the world.
Audi has been careful not to overclaim the connection. The new car reprises the split rear window, the short overhangs and above all the philosophy. It does not reprise the spaceframe, and it is built on a shared group platform precisely so that it can make money where its ancestor could not.
The A2 e-tron is built at Audi's home plant in Ingolstadt on the Volkswagen Group's updated MEB+ architecture, the same underpinnings as the Volkswagen ID.3 Neo and the Cupra Born. It is the second electric model to be produced there after the Q6 e-tron.
Audi has been notably direct that the car was developed significantly faster than normal and makes deliberate use of existing production structures. Chief Executive Officer Gernot Döllner described it as 'efficient, compact, and confident,' and framed it alongside the full-size Q9 as one of two strategic bookends for the brand's 2026 lineup. It effectively replaces the A1 and Q2 at the bottom of the range.
There is a pricing question the company will have to answer. A comparable Volkswagen ID.3 Neo starts at €33,995, which puts the Audi premium at more than €4,000 for a car sharing much of its hardware. Audi's answer is standard equipment and efficiency, and buyers will decide whether that covers the gap.
Orders open on September 10 in Germany, with first customer deliveries in December 2026. Audi has confirmed no plans to sell the A2 e-tron in the United States, and none should be expected. It was engineered in Germany for European buyers, in a segment American showrooms walked away from years ago.
That is a genuine loss, because the question this car asks is one the American market will eventually have to confront. Batteries are the most expensive component in an electric vehicle, and using fewer kilowatt-hours to cover the same distance is the only lever that reduces cost, weight, charging time and running expense at once.
