BAHRAICH, INDIA: A 19-year-old woman in India climbed a nearly 100-foot-high mobile phone tower after her family reportedly opposed her relationship, eventually getting married to her partner through a video call while still on the tower.
According to Indian media reports, the unusual incident took place in the Ashrina village of Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh. The woman, identified as Mehak, had reportedly been in a relationship with a young man named Nooruddin for around five months.
Reports said the couple's families were initially opposed to their marriage, allegedly because of differences between their communities. Following an argument with her mother, Mehak climbed the mobile tower at around 6am and refused to come down.
Police and local residents reportedly spent nearly four hours trying to persuade her to descend safely. As the situation became increasingly tense, police intervened and held discussions with both families.
The families eventually agreed to the marriage. Since Nooruddin was in Mumbai, his consent was obtained through a video call, after which a local cleric conducted the Nikah on the tower in the presence of witnesses.
Following the completion of the marriage ceremony, female police officers helped Mehak safely climb down from the tower, bringing the unusual hours-long standoff to an end.
