Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to meet Chinese experts today to review progress on a 100-megawatt (MW) solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan, sources told ProPakistani
The meeting will assess the project's implementation status, with the prime minister expected to receive a briefing on various aspects of the initiative.
Relevant federal ministers and senior government officials will also attend the meeting. Shehbaz is expected to issue important directives regarding the project.
Project Includes Battery Storage System
The 100MW solar project includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) designed to improve the reliability of electricity supply.
The initiative aims to improve power availability in Gilgit-Baltistan and help meet the region's energy requirements through solar power generation and battery storage facilities.
The 100MW solar initiative in Gilgit-Baltistan was first proposed in early 2025 as a federal project under the Public Sector Development Programme and the prime minister's special package, amid persistent electricity shortages in the region.
The Gilgit-Baltistan government hired NESPAK to conduct the feasibility study, and the project received approval from the Central Development Working Party before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved it in August 2025 at an estimated cost of Rs24.957 billion, with a three-year completion timeline
