Rotary donation helps SHAS purchase new AEDs

South Haven Area Emergency Services says a $6,000 contribution from the Rotary Club of South Haven and the Rotary International Foundation will help it better respond to medical emergencies. SHAES announced the support this week, saying the $3,000 donation from the local Rotary Club was matched by the Rotary International Foundation, allowing the agency to purchase three automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. The devices will be placed on grass rigs at the department's three stations, which can be the first units dispatched to medical emergencies in outlying areas. SHAES Director Brandon Hinz says every second is critical during cardiac emergencies. The department serves about 97 square miles, with its farthest areas up to eight miles from the main station. The new AEDs also can be used if a firefighter suffers a cardiac emergency while responding to calls, particularly during strenuous grass fires. Rotary has previously helped SHAES purchase Jaws of Life equipment and AEDs for South Haven's beach safety program.
