Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a series of pointed messages with clear targets, although he stopped short of naming them, following a meeting of his cabinet on Monday. Erdogan warned that Ankara would not remain passive in the face of moves that he claimed were aimed at 'encircling' Turkey in the region. He stressed that Turkey's calm and measured approach should not be mistaken for weakness, insisting that his country would defend what it considers its homeland. 'Our dignified and calm stance should not lead anyone to fantasies. On these lands, which we made our homeland through blood and sacrifice, we will not allow anyone to impose their will on us.' Erdogan added that Turkey would not simply watch from the sidelines as what he described as hostile steps were taken to surround the country. 'Turkey is not against any country, society, religion or culture.' Erdogan vows to protect Turkey's independence The Turkish president also stressed that Ankara would continue to protect its independence and strengthen the country's prosperity despite what he described as an increasingly challenging geopolitical environment. 'In this difficult geographical region, we want to continue our path as an independent and prosperous state. We will never allow anyone to prevent this.' Warning to those opposing Turkey's growing influence Erdogan also criticised what he described as forces that are uncomfortable with Turkey's growing strength and its efforts to play a greater role in establishing peace and stability across the region. 'Those who are disturbed by the strengthening of our country and its efforts to establish peace and stability in the region cannot prevent us from continuing on our path.' Erdogan highlights alliances and regional unity The Turkish president also emphasised Ankara's policy of alliances and cooperation, saying Turkey would continue working to strengthen unity and harmony across what he described as its wider sphere of influence. 'In accordance with our policy of alliance and unity, we are determined to work to ensure that unity and harmony take root throughout our sphere of influence.' Erdogan's remarks come amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the region, with Ankara increasingly emphasising Turkey's strategic interests and its determination to maintain an active regional role.
