Medical specialists at Command Hospital (Western Command), Chandimandir, after the successful administration of the facility's first CAR-T cell therapy, a landmark in advanced cancer treatment within the armed forces
Mohali:
Command Hospital (Western Command), Chandimandir, has achieved a major milestone in advanced cancer care by administering its first CAR-T cell therapy to a 16-year-old patient suffering from relapsed and refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL).
The procedure, carried out by the hospital's department of haematology, makes Chandimandir the first Command Hospital after Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi, to offer the cutting-edge treatment, according to the Army.
CAR-T therapy is an advanced form of personalised cancer treatment in which a patient's T-cells are collected and genetically engineered with a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) before being reinfused into the body.
The modified cells can then identify and attack cancer cells more effectively.
The therapy offers a critical treatment option for patients with relapsed or refractory blood cancers who have exhausted conventional treatment avenues.
The achievement marks a significant expansion of the hospital's haematology services and strengthens the armed forces' capability to treat complex blood cancers through advanced cellular therapies.
The hospital's haematology centre, set up recently, has already performed nine successful bone marrow transplants and has now added CAR-T therapy to its treatment portfolio.
Maj Gen Harkirat Singh, Commandant, Command Hospital (Western Command), said the breakthrough was the result of sustained clinical efforts by the centre.
The Army said the milestone places the Chandimandir facility at the forefront of advanced cellular therapies and opens new possibilities for treating difficult haematological malignancies.
The development also underscores the
Indian Army
's focus on adopting cutting-edge medical technologies and strengthening specialised healthcare capabilities within its medical system.
