EPA Punjab In Action On Pollution, 158 Brick Kilns Demolished In 30 Days

LAHORE, (APP - UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 16th Sep, 2026) The Punjab Environment Protection Agency intensified its crackdown on brick kilns and other sources of smog and air pollution, demolishing 158 brick kilns across the province over the past 30 days. According to department statistics, 7,953 brick kilns and related units were inspected between August 15 and September 15, 2026. Action was taken against units found violating environmental laws, with 69 units sealed, 110 FIRs registered and fines totaling Rs14.3 million imposed. Among the districts, 24 brick kilns were demolished in Bhakkar, 17 in Bahawalpur, 13 in Sargodha, 12 each in Jhelum and Okara, and 10 in Multan. Action was also taken against brick kilns in other districts as part of the province-wide operation. The Environment Protection Agency said its crackdown against industrial units and other major sources of pollution was also continuing. Field operations against smoke-emitting units, dust and other environmental violations were being intensified ahead of the smog season. Meanwhile, Lahore's air quality is also being continuously monitored. According to the latest available data, Lahore's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 106. Officials said air quality could fluctuate with changes in weather conditions, including wind speed and direction. The department said controlling local pollution sources, particularly industrial emissions and brick kilns, remained a key focus of its enforcement activities. Director General Environment Protection Agency Punjab Abdullah Nayyar Sheikh said action against major sources of pollution would continue without discrimination. He said brick kilns and industrial units violating environmental laws would face strict action.
