Police issue autumn driving warning as weather turns wet in Sussex

Sussex Police issued a reminder following wet weather, warning that the easier driving conditions experienced over the summer will soon give way to rain, standing water, fallen leaves and reduced visibility. The force said on Tuesday (September 8): 'Today's wet weather is a reminder that the driving conditions we've enjoyed over the summer won't be around forever.' 'As the seasons change, roads can become more challenging with rain, standing water, fallen leaves and reduced visibility, particularly during early mornings and evenings.' Police recommended that motorists leave more space between vehicles and check that their tyres, lights and windscreen wipers are in good condition. Drivers were also advised to allow extra time for journeys when conditions are poor and to 'drive to the conditions, not just the speed limit'. The force said motorists should use their headlights when visibility is reduced, warning that daytime running lights may not illuminate a vehicle's rear lights. Sussex Police's social media post read: 'While today's weather may be short-lived, autumn is just around the corner and now is a good time to get back into those seasonal driving habits.' The force also reminded people to report flooding, fallen trees and other road hazards to the relevant local authority. In an emergency, or if someone witnesses a serious collision, police said people should call 999. Wednesday is forecast to be dry with sunny spells, although cloud will increase through the day. Temperatures are again expected to reach around 20C. Looking further ahead, Thursday is expected to be dry before rain arrives overnight, while Friday could bring outbreaks of light rain. Saturday is forecast to be dry, bright and warm, with temperatures around average for early September. The BBC's latest forecast for Sussex reads: 'Wednesday will be a dry day with partly cloudy skies and sunny spells. The best of any sunshine will be later in the afternoon. 'Thursday will be dry with sunny spells. It will turn cloudier by the end of the day with patchy rain moving in from the west. Friday will see any overnight rain clear early to leave a dry day with sunny spells. Saturday will be a dry and warm day with sunshine.'
