Clifford DeWayne Hogue Sr. 1942-2026

Clifford DeWayne Hogue Sr., known to everyone as DeWayne, joined the heavenly choir when he passed away peacefully on September 4, 2026, at York Hospital, surrounded by the love of the family he spent his life building. He was 84. Clifford DeWayne Hogue Sr. Born June 16, 1942, in Cokeville, PA, DeWayne was the son of the late Clifford V. and M. Edna (Brazenski) Hogue. DeWayne served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force, first from 1964 to 1971 and again from 1973 to 1986, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. His service carried him around the world — from Columbus AFB, Mississippi, to RAF Lakenheath, England; Incirlik AFB, Turkey; Parrin AFB and Bergstrom AFB, Texas; Korat AB, Thailand; Chanute AFB, Illinois; Minot AFB, North Dakota; Kadena AB, Okinawa; and Scott AFB, Illinois. He wore that service with quiet pride for the rest of his life. After retiring from the Air Force, DeWayne went on to work as a budget analyst at Letterkenny Army Depot until his second retirement. But it was the work he and his wife, Mabel, did outside of any paycheck that may have meant the most: for 21 years, they opened their home and their hearts as foster parents to numerous children in need. DeWayne was a proud graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School, where he sang in the Glee Club and was an original member of the Esquires, continuing a love of music that had been part of his life since childhood. He sang with his family on WCHA and at churches and events throughout the region as part of the Christ Ambassadors Quartet, a Southern gospel group founded by his father. He carried the joy of singing gospel music forward for decades more in church choirs and ensembles, and enjoyed attending concerts as often as possible. Faith and family were the two constants of DeWayne's life, and more often than not, they were the same thing. He served as a deacon and a Royal Rangers leader at several churches and stayed active wherever life took him. When his four sons all played baseball at the same time, he became an expert in the art of racing from one ball field to the next so as not to miss a single game — often helping to coach along the way. He was also a past member of the Lion's Club. DeWayne had a collector's heart; he kept shelves of vinyl records, stacks of books on every subject, boxes of baseball cards, and a wall's worth of ball caps. He was, by universal family agreement, a sharp dresser — his tie collection was practically its own personality. He never met a board game, card game, or jigsaw puzzle he didn't want to finish, especially with grandchildren around the table, and he could always be found with a classic TV show playing in the background. He was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Steelers, and his homemade grape-nut ice cream was legendary enough to need no introduction at any gathering of family and friends. DeWayne had a gift for staying close to people, no matter the distance or the years. He loved keeping up with family and friends on Facebook, and for decades he and Mabel sent Christmas cards to their wider families and the many friends they made during their years of moving from base to base with the Air Force — connections he never let fade. DeWayne was preceded in death by infant daughter, Deanna, and his siblings Thomas Jones, Darlene Faust, Delmis Hogue, and Rodney Hogue. He is survived by Mabel Grace (Dice) Hogue, his wife of 61 years, and their children: DeWayna Lynn Pittman and husband Randall; C. DeWayne Hogue Jr. and wife Monica; John Delbert Hogue and wife Lori; Thomas Darryl Hogue and wife Lisa; Franklin David Hogue and wife Elizabeth; and Darlene Yvonne Leasure and husband Terry. He is also survived by his sister, Janice Cook, and his brother, Virgil Hogue and wife Vickie, along with several brothers- and sisters-in-law and a large extended family, including many special cousins. He also leaves behind grandchildren Clifford DeWayne Hogue III (and wife Yerisma), Bobby Hogue (and wife Amanda), DeWayna Hershey (and husband Adam), Bailee Hogue, Nathan Hogue, Noah Hogue, Brittany Carillo (and husband Sal), Austin Sjaarda, Jeffrey Smidberg, Tyler Hogue, Tommy Hogue (and wife Kaitie), Katelyn Sephton (and husband Jack), DJ Hogue, Shane Hogue (and wife Sydney), Shannon Friar (and husband Bryant), Adrienne Kirby (and husband Ed), Riley Hogue, Emily McLamb, John McLamb, Alaina Leasure, and Ben Leasure, along with 20 great-grandchildren, who will all carry his stories, his songs, and maybe even his ice cream recipe forward. Family and friends are invited to a viewing at Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg, on Thursday, September 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., and again on Friday, September 11, from 10 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall. DeWayne will be laid to rest at 3 pm at Parklawns Memorial Gardens, with military honors provided by the American Legion Minutemen.
