HC declines urgent hearing to PILs on hostels

New Delhi: A day after issuing a slew of directions, Delhi High Court Tuesday refused to grant an urgent hearing on another PIL in connection with the building collapse in a PG accommodation in south Delhi. The fresh petition seeks hostel facilities for students in all colleges run by Delhi University, but HC wondered if such directions could be issued 'in the interim' and questioned the urgency for seeking immediate hearing. A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia asked the lawyer why time was being wasted unnecessarily and said the petition should be filed for auto-listing Wednesday. The lawyer said the public interest litigation was being filed in the wake of the PG building collapse in Satya Niketan near Delhi University's South Campus. The court said such a direction couldn't be issued while dealing with the plea and pointed out it had already passed an order in another PIL on the same issue Monday. The lawyer claimed the other PIL had different asks, including compensation for the kin of deceased and injured persons. 'Can we issue such a direction in the interim? File it. It will be taken up tomorrow,' the bench said. In the second half, yet another PIL seeking the court's intervention on the matter was mentioned, but the court repeated its earlier stand that once filed, the matter will come for hearing on its own. On Monday, HC ordered a high-level MCD inquiry into the building collapse and made it clear that govt cannot evade responsibility. The high court, which termed the incident 'most unfortunate', said such tragedies were a result of inadequate measures employed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi and other authorities, and directed them to double rescue efforts so that lives could be saved.
