Man stabbed on Manchester street as police launch appeal and man arrested

A man in his 20s has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the centre of Longsight today (September 8). Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were first called to Stockport Road at around 12.15pm this afternoon where they found the man "with injuries consistent with a knife wound." The man has since been taken to hospital and is being treated for serious injuries. GMP have arrested a 64-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody for questioning. A cordon was put in place around the scene on Stockport Road by GMP for a matter of hours as police dealt with the incident, the Manchester Evening News understands. A spokesperson for GMP said: "Officers responded to reports of an assault on Stockport Road, Longsight at around 12:15pm this afternoon (Tuesday 8 September 2026). "Upon arrival, they located a man, aged in his 20s, with injuries consistent with a knife wound. He has been taken to hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. "One man, aged 64, has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (S18 assault) and possession of an offensive weapon. He remains in custody for questioning. "Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area to please come forward."
