They warned that a divided opposition could give President William Ruto an advantage in the race for State House. Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru urged the United Alternative opposition coalition to end prolonged negotiations. They called on the coalition to settle on a candidate capable of mounting a serious challenge to the Kenya Kwanza administration. Also, the leaders called for a coordinated opposition campaign ahead of the election. Ngirici calls for unity Ngirici said the opposition should learn from the 2022 election, when the Mt Kenya region largely backed the Kenya Kwanza alliance. We gave Kenya Kwanza overwhelming support, and now we must make a different decision in the next election,' Ngirici said. She urged opposition leaders to put aside individual ambitions and focus on presenting Kenyans with a credible alternative. 'We cannot continue with endless negotiations while the country is waiting for a credible alternative. The opposition must agree on one presidential candidate and commit to supporting and campaigning for that person,' she said. The former Woman Representative also urged Mt Kenya voters to scrutinise political promises and make informed decisions rather than automatically supporting traditional political formations. 'Removing Ruto from power is not enough. There must also be accountability for the crimes of murder and abductions that have occurred during his watch,' Njiru said. He called on opposition leaders to unite around a common agenda and offer voters a clear alternative based on respect for human rights, the rule of law and the Constitution. 'The opposition must stop playing politics among themselves and start preparing to take responsibility for the country. 'Kenyans need a government that respects human rights, the rule of law and the Constitution,' he said. The leaders' remarks come as political activity gathers pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with opposition parties seeking to consolidate their support and determine how best to challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
