Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week: Geneva's Gabe Barwiolek

Name: Gabe Barwiolek School: Geneva, senior Sport: Soccer Why he was selected: Barwiolek has tallied five goals during the Vikings' 3-1 start to the season. He scored twice against Waubonsie Valley and Oswego, then added another against Timothy Christian. He and sophomore Tyler Larson connected twice in the win over the Panthers. Standing at 6-foot-2, Barwiolek spent the summer training in Spain. The forward registered six goals and seven assists in 2025. Barwiolek was selected as the Kane County Chronicle Athlete of the Week in an online vote. Other nominees included Geneva football's Nelson Wendell, St. Charles North flag football's Zandria Richardson and Kaneland football's Brody Guthrie. Here is Barwiolek's Q&A with sports reporter Matt McGowan. What do you make of your success so far this season? Barwiolek: I am super proud of the way we adapted to playing together, taking into account our large graduating class. Our success is a result of our hard work behind the scenes and I couldn't have the season that I'm having without the rest of the guys I'm sharing the field with, as well as my coaches and our parents supporting us each game. What's the biggest strength to your game? Barwiolek: I'd say my biggest strength in soccer is my soccer IQ because I am able to see the plays unfold many steps ahead. How did you get into soccer? Barwiolek: I began playing when I was 3 years old. It was mostly influenced by my dad and older brother who helped me discover my love for the game. How was your experience in Spain? What was your favorite part? Barwiolek: My experience in Spain was surreal. I made many new friends with whom I made many memories with. My favorite part of the trip was playing against teams and players from all across the globe and adapting to playing against many unique playing styles. What are your future plans after graduation? Barwiolek: My goal is to play soccer at the highest collegiate level, and after to hopefully carry my talents over to a professional contract. What can this Geneva team be this season? Barwiolek: This team is so much more capable than what preseason articles and rankings have placed us at. I strongly believe this team is capable of a state appearance, as long as we continue to work for each other and trust the work we are putting in behind the scenes. What's the best thing you've learned in your soccer career? Barwiolek: You only need one person to believe in you and your talents. Who is your favorite player or team to watch? Barwiolek: I enjoy watching the Polish national team because it is my dream to play for them one day.
