SEC without LSU? Special Meeting may boot Tigers from conference

(KTAL/KMSS) – The Southeastern Conference has amended its court filing against LSU, claiming the university has a 'lack of institutional control over the athletics program,' and is now asking that LSU be removed from the conference. According to the amended filing, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said that 15 SEC CEOs (LSU not included) informally told him to issue a notice that a Special Meeting of the Conference will take place on September 10, 2026, for the purpose of considering termination of LSU's membership in the SEC, whether LSU renounces its intention to roster and play professional players on its team or not. Within the filing, the SEC also mentions that Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill, acting in her official capacity as AG, filed an amicus brief supporting Jack Pyburn, the primary litigant in the case. Sankey said that while Murrill did not speak at the hearing for the preliminary injunction, she was seated at the plaintiff's counsel table. However, during breaks, Sankey said she made a 'series of public statements in her official capacity that criticized the SEC, Sankey, and the SEC's decision to file suit.' The decision came after LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin publicly reiterated his disagreement with and objections to the Professionalism Rules and the SEC's position in the recruiting matter, following the team's primetime trouncing of Clemson. 'Forcing the SEC and its other members to associate with an institution by its actions has disregarded the provisions in the SEC Constitution and Bylaws requiring that each member institution keep institutional control over its athletics program and conform to the rules and bylaws of the SEC and the NCAA also associates the SEC and its members with conduct and messages with which they do not want to be associated.' According to the filing, Sankey will issue a notice of the September 10 Special Meeting of the Conference to consider the termination of LSU's membership.
