Traveling to downtown Dallas this week? You'll need to show ID.

The nation's leading Republicans will be in Dallas this week for the first GOP midterm convention. Citizens in the area will need to take extra measures when moving through a portion of the city's downtown. The two-day event Wednesday and Thursday will bring an estimated 20,000 visitors as President Trump, Vice President JD Vance and an assemblage of leading Republicans take the stage and mingle around the American Airlines Center (AAC). The high-profile attendees led to the creation of security checkpoints in the area surrounding Victory Park and the AAC, with checkpoints located at the east, north and south sides of the venue, per CBS News' Briseida Holguin. Anyone driving or walking through the designated zone will need to show ID or "documentation confirming why they're in the area," per Holguin. Multiple security barricades and checkpoints were ready as of Monday around 5 a.m. CT, and an outdoor atrium outside the AAC was in the process of completing construction on tents, gates and a speaker stage. Security checkpoints surrounding the AAC are expected to remain in place through Friday. This week's event won't be a typical convention with nominations and awarded delegates. Instead, the AAC will host a de facto two-day campaign rally, in which Trump and Vance will look to both promote Republican Congressional candidates, as well as the president and vice president's agenda and record in office. "This historic Midterm Convention will highlight President Trump's many accomplishments and unwavering commitment to restoring America," RNC Chairman Joe Gruters said in a statement in June announcing the convention. "This convention will be a Trumpapalooza, where we will showcase the America First agenda." Trump will speak on both nights of the convention and deliver the closing keynote address Thursday night. Vance will headline the festivities Wednesday. The Texas GOP offered tickets and "honorary delegate" credentials for purchase for $10,000 ahead of this week's convention, per the Dallas Morning News. Other Republicans were invited sans charge, and a free lottery was also offered, then closed last Friday.
