Suspect arrested after man beaten at tent encampment along the bank of the Kalamazoo River

KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says it arrested a 25-year-old man Sunday after an assault that left a 48-year-old man hospitalized with serious injuries. Around 7:20 a.m. officers responded to the 600 block of East Michigan Avenue after receiving a report of a man who had been severely beaten. Officers located a 48-year-old man suffering from significant injuries. KDPS says investigators determined the assault occurred at a tent encampment along the east bank of the Kalamazoo River, north of the railroad tracks and west of Riverview Drive. The victim's condition deteriorated while officers were speaking with him, and he was transported by Life EMS to a local area hospital for further treatment. He was listed in stable condition following treatment. KDPS detectives responded and continued the investigation, developing information that identified the 25-year-old man as the suspect. They later located him at a residence in the 700 block of South Rose Street. He was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony assault and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.
