The great Indianapolis indie poppers Wishy were a Stereogum Band To Watch back in 2023, and they've already made good on their potential a few times over. About a month from now, they'll release their new album Nature's Pill. This seems to be one of those situations where a huge chunk of the album will already be out in the world by the time the whole thing drops. Wishy already shared the early singles "Lovesick," "All The Rage," and "Sensational," and a new one drops today. Wishy's new song "Mona Lisa" is not a Slick Rick cover. (Lots of people probably have songs called "Mona Lisa," but the Slick Rick one was the first one that popped into my head.) This "Mona Lisa" is the kind of quasi-ironic slacker pop gem where someone, in this case singer/guitarist Kevin Krauter rhymes "smile" with "wow" and gets away with it. It gains steam over its four and a half minutes, its hooks glowing brighter. Krauter describes "Mona Lisa" like this: "A courtroom drama starring love and apathy. Was all that pleasure worth all that pain? Will the opposing witness withstand cross-examination? You be the judge!" Check out the Nate Kahn-directed video below. Nature's Pill is out 10/2 on Winspear.
