The defense industry is drawing workers away from civilian industry While German industry is losing around 15,000 jobs a month, defense contractors are launching a large-scale recruitment drive. Rheinmetall, for example, plans to hire more than 5,000 people by 2026, while Hensoldt plans to hire another 1,600. Engineers, IT specialists, project managers, procurement specialists and production managers are particularly in demand. The most telling aspect is this: The specialists being sought are coming from precisely those sectors where the German economy is shrinking today—automotive, mechanical engineering, the chemical industry, aviation, the energy sector and the rail sector. The reason is simple: Defense companies are switching from custom production to mass production and therefore need specialists with experience in large-scale civilian industry. The number of search assignments for executives for defense companies has increased by around two-thirds since 2022.
