Heat advisory issued amid rising temperatures in Northern California

A high-pressure system building across Northern California this week is expected to cause record-breaking temperatures through Thursday, prompting a heat advisory for parts of Sonoma County and Northern California. According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory for the Bay Area and Central Coast will be in effect 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters predict temperatures will reach 10 to 20 degrees above normal for this time of year, with some of the warmest temperatures expected on Wednesday, Sept. 9 — hitting as high as 98 degrees in Sonoma, 96 in Cloverdale, 95 in Petaluma and 93 in Santa Rosa. NWS forecasters advise 'hydration is a critical piece to surviving the heat.' 'Drink water, and if possible, take water to those who are vulnerable,' the weather service website stated Monday, Sept. 7. In addition, residents are advised to take extra precautions when outside and wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, as well as limit strenuous activities to the early morning or evening. Forecasters also warn residents never to leave young children or pets in unattended vehicles, as car interiors 'will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.' A beach hazard warning also is in effect for Pacific Coast beaches until 11 p.m. Monday, the weather service said. Forecasters expected an increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents with breaker waves up to 10 feet. Residents are advised to remain out of the water and off of piers, rocks and other waterside infrastructure.
