President John Mahama calls for more investment in women's football

President John Mahama has called for greater investment in women's football, saying Ghana has achieved more success in the women's game despite receiving less financial support than men's football. Mahama made the comments when Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC, MTN FA Cup holders Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies paid a courtesy call on him ahead of their respective continental campaigns. The President said Ghana's women have delivered more trophies for the country and should therefore receive greater financial backing. 'Indeed, we have done much better in women's football than in men's football. Our women have won more trophies for us than the men, and yet we put all the money into men's football.' Mahama also raised concerns about the treatment of Ampem Darkoa Ladies during the courtesy call, saying the club initially received less attention than the men's teams. 'Even today, you can see the discrimination. Ampem Darkoa were here, and they were almost ignored until I intervened. Yet look at the presentation she made, very eloquent.' He called for deliberate measures to close the gap in support between men's and women's football. 'In the spirit of affirmative action, we must deliberately support women's football and help bring the women's teams up.'
