Joey Barton denied bail, will remain in custody until March 2027 trial

Joey Barton, the former Premier League footballer, has been remanded in custody until his trial next year after having a bail application refused. Barton, 44, from Widnes, Cheshire, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Kevin Lynch, 51, at Fairway, Huyton, on March 8. Last week, at Liverpool Crown Court, Judge David Potter adjourned the trial to March 8, 2027, meaning Barton cannot be released in the meantime. On Monday, Judge Potter remanded Barton in custody after refusing a renewed bail application. He is next due in court for a pre-trial hearing scheduled for December 11. Advertisement Police had been called to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club shortly after 9pm GMT to reports of a man being assaulted on Sunday, March 8. At the time, prosecutors said Lynch could lose sight in one eye as a result of the injuries he sustained. Barton, who won one cap for England, played for clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, Burnley and Rangers as a midfielder before retiring in 2017.
