CSP encourages responsible driving over Labor Day weekend

DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado State Patrol, along with other local law enforcement agencies, is out in full force this holiday weekend to keep the roadways safe for residents. According to state authorities, in 2025, Colorado saw nearly 16,000 DUI-related arrests. CSP said three-day holiday weekends can be the most dangerous of the entire year. 'Compared to a normal weekend, there is going to be that increase in traffic, so you want to make sure that you are using patience, that you're driving the speed limit and that you are driving responsibly,' said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Gabriel Moltrer. A major concern over holiday weekends is driving while under the influence. Police said arrests are made throughout the day and late at night after bars and nightclubs close. 'What you've got to look out for is your people. You know what I mean, you have to pay attention to like where everybody's going, what everybody's doing,' said one resident. DUI can leave a driver with legal bills of $15,000 or more. Moltrer said people should plan ahead by arranging for a designated sober driver. Authorities also recommend utilizing rideshare services. The staff at the Original Glam Med Spa planned a team-building outing in downtown Denver Sunday, and said they made plans ahead of time so everyone would get home safely. 'We're doing team building and I'm making all the girls Uber home,' said the owner of Original Glam Med Spa, who allowed the staff to expense their rides. CSP said it will release information about the number of arrests after the Labor Day weekend concludes. Anyone who suspects that someone is driving impaired should dial *277 and provide vehicle information, location and direction of travel.
