AI to strengthen doctors, not replace them: BHU VC

Chandigarh: Artificial Intelligence (AI) will transform healthcare by enhancing doctors' capabilities, improving efficiency and supporting better clinical decisions, Banaras Hindu University vice-chancellor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi said at PGIMER's 63rd Foundation Day celebrations Monday. Delivering the Foundation Day lecture on 'AI in Healthcare', Chaturvedi said AI should be seen as an enabler, not a replacement for doctors. 'The most successful healthcare deployments today are not examples of AI replacing doctors. They are examples of AI helping doctors perform at their best,' he said. Calling PGIMER a 'true national asset', he praised its contributions to healthcare, medical education, research and innovation. Chaturvedi said AI had moved beyond being a technological novelty and was now making deep inroads into healthcare, research and decision-making. He highlighted its potential in medical research, remote healthcare, radiology, hospital management and evidence-based care. However, he cautioned that AI models trained largely on western datasets may not adequately reflect Indian disease patterns and clinical realities. India, he said, must move beyond being a consumer of healthcare AI and develop solutions tailored to its own needs.
