Accidents down 6.97%, fatalities down 8.03% at UP's zero fatality district black spots

Lucknow: Road accidents , fatalities and injuries at accident-prone locations covered under Uttar Pradesh DGP's Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programme registered a decline during the first eight months of 2026, officials said at a road-safety workshop held in Lucknow on Monday. Data presented at the meeting showed that between Jan and Aug, accidents at ZFD-covered locations fell by 6.97%. Over the same period, fatalities declined by 8.03% and injuries by 6.11%, according to figures shared with participating officers. The one-day workshop was organised by UP traffic directorate at Police Headquarters. It brought together officers heading 228 Critical Corridor (CC) teams and ZFD nodal officers. The CC teams have been constituted to work on 213 identified accident-prone locations across 59 districts under the third and fourth phases of the ZFD programme. Addressing the officers, DGP Rajeev Krishna said road crashes should not be treated as isolated or random events. He instructed CC team in-charges to scientifically identify the root causes behind crashes in their areas and to implement preventive and enforcement measures in 'mission mode'. Krishna also directed teams to coordinate with concerned departments on road engineering interventions and other remedial steps, pursue follow-ups on pending measures and escalate unresolved issues to senior officials when needed. Officials quoted him as saying that accident prevention is the primary responsibility of CC teams and that their mandate extends beyond post-accident procedures. He further said each crash should be analysed to identify systemic deficiencies and develop steps to prevent similar incidents. The DGP called for stronger technical capacity in accident prevention and investigation, along with better use of available resources and training. Participants received training on road safety, key provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act , accident investigation processes, iRAD/eDAR systems, identification of black spots and emergency response including first aid and CPR. The DGP said performance and outcomes of CC teams would be factored into assessments of officer competence and future career progression. Officers also shared suggestions during the workshop, and Krishna directed the additional director general of police (Traffic) to review them and incorporate suitable measures into future traffic policies.
