Former UK running back Dante Dowdell shares recovery update

Over the summer, former Kentucky football running back Dante Dowdell reportedly suffered severe injuries following an ATV accident near his hometown of Picayune, Mississippi. Dowdell was a one-year Cat, transferring in from Nebraska after a prior stint with Oregon. He was one of two running backs that acted as UK's 1-2 punch alongside Seth McGowan during Mark Stoops' final season at the helm in Lexington. Throughout the course of the season, Dowdell logged 112 carries for 560 yards and three touchdowns, famously "calling game" in the Cats' season opener against Toledo with a 79-yard, career-long touchdown run to put the game on ice. In the offseason, after Will Stein took over at the helm of the program, Dowdell would transfer to Georgia before his unfortunate accident put all hopes of playing in 2026 on the backburner. In a recovery video he shared on Instagram, Dowdell revealed he suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs and nerve damage to his right arm. Dowdell also broke both of his collarbones and required nine staples in his head following the accident. The caption of the video read, "God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers!!" It also had the biblical verse Jeremiah 29:11, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'Plans to proper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" Finally, Dowdell concluded the caption with, "STORY NOT OVER." Dowdell was hospitalized for 2.5 months after the accident and in the video, showed footage of his physical therapy, including being assisted to walk and working on dexterity with the support of a harness to keep him upright. Regardless, the update was a positive one. After the initial accident, there had been concerns that Dowdell may never walk again, let alone play football. It may still take quite some time to get Dowdell back on a football field, if he's able to do so, but his mindset of working his way back and the footage of him walking and working through his physical therapy exercises provide hope all the same. Along with a plethora of Georgia Bulldogs and other prominent college football players, a number of Wildcats also offered words of support and encouragement for their former teammate. In the comments of the post, UK's Jason Patterson and Alex Afari Jr., along with former Cats Beau Allen, Keeshawn Silver and more all offered support. There's still a long road ahead for Dowdell, but, if nothing else, it was reassuring to see a former Cat working his way back after such a traumatic injury that threatened to take the game away from him altogether.
