Chandrapur Police Foil Cattle Trafficking Bid; 2 Die, 63 Rescued

Chandrapur : Sixty-five cattle being transported in cramped and allegedly inhumane conditions were intercepted by Chandrapur local crime branch (LCB) personnel at Pipri Phata on the Dhanora-Gadchandur road within Ghugghus police limits on Sunday. Two animals died at the spot, while 63 were rescued and shifted to a shelter. Police said the cattle were packed tightly into a 14-wheeler truck without adequate provision of food or water. The condition of the animals prompted the police to seize the truck and rescue the surviving cattle, which were taken to Pyar Foundation at Padoli for veterinary care. The operation led to the seizure of property worth ₹27.82 lakh, including the truck valued at ₹15 lakh, cattle valued at ₹12.60 lakh and mobile phones and other material worth ₹22,000. Three persons were arrested, the truck driver Omprakash Kawale (38), from Nagpur, and labourers Kaleem Malik (33) and Shahrukh Malik (30), of Uttar Pradesh. Three other suspects—Irfan Sheikh, Tausif Bhai Nizam Ahmed and Arbaz Qureshi—are absconding. The truck is owned by Javed Pathan of Aurangabad, said police. A case has been registered at Ghughus police station under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, the amended Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
