While Silicon Valley often champions the principle of 'move fast and break things,' David Zagaynov, co-founder and CEO of Poseidon Aerospace, is committed to the efficient transportation of goods. During his tenure in logistics at Amazon in 2024, Zagaynov, together with Poseidon co-founder Parker Tenney—who previously held a position at Lockheed Martin—often discussed the emergence of advanced air mobility startups. In an exclusive interview with TechCrunch, Zagaynov shared that their discussions primarily focused on the integration of cutting-edge technologies. 'Our ultimate goal is to transform the future of aerologistics,' Zagaynov stated. 'I don't want to be overly critical, but it seems that many aerospace startups become distracted by shiny technology and rush to launch. Our priority continues to be optimizing cargo transportation.' Last year, Poseidon Aerospace secured $11 million in seed funding to advance this vision. Recently, the company completed a $60 million Series A funding round and is looking forward to the inaugural test flight of its unmanned cargo aircraft, the Egret, by the year's end. This funding round was led by TQ Ventures, an early-stage venture capital firm, with additional support from Hanwha Asset Management, G Squared, and JAWS. Existing investors, including Starship Ventures, Draper Associates, and Drover Ventures, also contributed. In keeping with Zagaynov's intent to avoid being 'nerd-sniped' by impractical distractions, Poseidon adheres to a stringent strategy aimed at reducing costs related to cargo transport. The startup embraces autonomy and remote piloting while steering clear of the vertical takeoff and landing technologies that are popular with many aviation startups. Plans for hydrogen or electric propulsion systems have also been abandoned. Both the Egret and its seaplane counterpart, the Heron, are fixed-wing aircraft powered by conventional combustion engines. 'It's quite challenging to exceed the energy density of carbon-based fuels,' Zagaynov explained. 'Can I devise an efficient transport solution with wings to move goods at the lowest cost? If successful, it would enable unmanned cargo aircraft to operate with significantly lower costs and better efficiency.' Zagaynov indicated that Poseidon is initially focusing on the defense and regional commercial cargo sectors. In the defense sector, the startup aims to design its aircraft to aid 'remote communities and underserved routes with limited air cargo service.' Poseidon aims for its aircraft to access areas with poor or deteriorated infrastructure, thereby strengthening a nation's logistics system and enhancing resilience to disruptions from adversaries. The company also remarked that China is actively testing its own cargo drones. In the commercial space, Zagaynov clarified that Poseidon does not plan to sell its aircraft. Instead, he envisions launching a regional air cargo service designed to compete with established firms like UPS and FedEx. By eliminating the necessity for pilots, Poseidon can significantly reduce operational costs. 'Logistics is fundamentally a commodity, so if you can deliver it more efficiently, quickly, and at a lower price, demand will naturally arise,' he elaborated. Additionally, the autonomous aspect allows Poseidon to operate as a more responsive and agile carrier, according to Zagaynov. When demand spikes in specific areas, Poseidon can easily alter its routes without being restricted by a limited pilot availability in one location. He envisions scenarios where Poseon's aircraft could disrupt traditional hub-and-spoke regional air cargo models, facilitating more direct deliveries akin to low-cost carriers like Breeze or Avelo. 'With a pilot on board, there's a limitation on the total flight hours they can log. If they finish a five-hour flight to a location, they can't immediately return without a relief pilot, incurring extra overnight expenses,' he stated. 'The aircraft itself is a valuable asset that often remains idle.' Moreover, the lack of pilots, as Zagaynov noted, allows for changes to the aircraft's core design. 'Eliminate the cockpit; remove life support systems,' he suggested. 'This drastically reduces structural weight, enhancing the payload-to-empty weight ratio. It also enables lighter and more efficient engine designs, leading to a feedback loop of cost-effective innovations.' To realize these ambitions, Poseidon has moved to a former Navy hangar in Alameda, California, and is preparing to expand its team as it nears its first flight. Last year, the startup successfully designed and flew a quarter-scale prototype of its vehicle, named Seagull, but now requires additional space for its full-sized aircraft with a 50-foot wingspan. Poseidon is also leveraging a regulatory atmosphere that encourages innovation among new entrants. The Federal Aviation Administration has recently launched a pilot program that accelerates testing for startups developing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Although Poseidon is not leading efforts in that domain, Zagaynov believes his startup can still capitalize on this initiative, emphasizing that there is now 'a pathway to commercialization that did not exist five to ten years ago.'
