There are few things better than a proper Sunday roast, especially when someone else is doing the cooking and there's no washing up afterwards – am I right? The Brown Cow in Fulham, part of the Butcombe Pubs collection, has all the ingredients for a brilliant Sunday afternoon: a warm neighbourhood atmosphere, generous plates of food and a menu that puts a fresh spin on familiar pub classics. We started with oysters, which were beautifully fresh and a lovely light way to begin the meal. Alongside them, we ordered the crunchy Padron peppers. Salty, moreish and perfect for sharing, they disappeared from the table in no time. It was a simple but delicious start that left us excited for the main event. For the roasts, we tried both the roast beef and the rolled pork belly. The beef was beautifully cooked, tender and full of flavour, while the pork belly was rich and succulent with a satisfyingly crisp exterior. Both portions were seriously generous, so make sure you arrive hungry. Of course, a Sunday roast is only as good as its accompaniments, and The Brown Cow gets all the important details right. The roast potatoes were wonderfully golden and crispy on the outside, with soft, fluffy centres. Carrots and cabbage added colour and freshness, while the cauliflower cheese was an essential extra: bubbling, creamy and properly indulgent. Everything was brought together with plenty of gravy and all the traditional trimmings you would hope to find on the plate. Despite being very full, we somehow found room for dessert. The affogato was a classic combination of hot espresso poured over cold, creamy ice cream and provided just the right hit of coffee to finish the afternoon. The standout, though, was the After Eight-inspired ice cream. Cool, creamy and packed with that familiar chocolate-and-mint flavour. It was also a refreshing ending after such a hearty lunch. The Brown Cow manages to deliver exactly what you want from a Sunday roast: delicious food, great portion sizes and a relaxed setting where you can settle in and take your time. The cooking feels thoughtful, but the pub remains welcoming and unfussy – the kind of place that works just as well for a catch-up with friends as it does for a long family lunch. For anyone looking for a proper Sunday roast in Fulham, this much-loved local is well worth adding to the list. Come hungry, order the cauliflower cheese and definitely save a little space for that After Eight ice cream. Find out more > The Brown Cow Fulham
