Authorities Urge Intensified Socialization and Disaster Preparedness Training

The Chairman of Commission D of the Jakarta DPRD, Yuke Yurike, has urged residents to strengthen preparedness for potential natural disasters, including earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. She stressed that people should follow government advisories and avoid underestimating the possibility of disasters occurring. Yuke said mitigation measures need to be prepared early so residents can respond calmly when emergencies arise. She also called for greater public awareness of preparedness as Jakarta and surrounding areas face multiple environmental risks. Yuke encouraged disaster preparedness education and training to be conducted regularly, particularly in schools and workplaces. Residents should understand evacuation routes, appropriate responses during earthquakes, and actions that should be avoided during emergencies. She also recommended that households prepare disaster bags containing essential items such as important documents, emergency lights, spare batteries, instant food, and other emergency supplies. Regular training, she said, would help ensure that preparedness becomes a practical skill rather than merely an emergency plan. Amid ongoing dry conditions, Yuke also reminded residents to conserve water in their daily activities. She acknowledged that regular watering may still be necessary to help mitigate the effects of volcanic ash, but emphasized that such measures must be balanced with responsible water use. Residents were encouraged to use only the amount of water they need and preserve available reserves. The warning comes as several reservoirs and rivers are beginning to experience declining water levels. Yuke stressed that water conservation should remain a priority for the coming months as dry conditions persist. She said residents need to recognize that preparedness involves addressing both sudden disasters and longer-term resource shortages. Coordinated efforts between the government and the community will therefore be important to maintain emergency readiness while protecting limited water supplies.
