According to Sacks, the previous issue, which was characterised by the clash between accelerationists and doomers, is being replaced by another one, and the new issue is whether AI will be developed within an open market with multiple models or whether it will be dominated by just a few closed corporations. He described his own position simply. "I kind of just see myself as a realist," he said. "I think that the technology is going to happen. Someone's going to develop it. And I'd rather it be the United States as opposed to China." He argued that consumer and business demand, not policy, is what's actually driving AI forward now. Podcast co-host Jason Calacanis pushed the closed-model risk further, telling Sacks directly that companies running closed systems "can rug pull you... at any time." Sacks built on that concern, arguing that leading AI labs could end up pushing for heavier regulatory oversight while simultaneously shaping how those rules get written, a dynamic he's previously compared to regulatory capture. Sacks pointed to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's stated concerns about sufficiently advanced open-weight models as evidence of a path toward centralised control. It's worth noting Amodei hasn't called for banning open-weight models outright; he's instead pushed for targeted measures like safety testing requirements for the most capable systems, a narrower position than Sacks' framing suggests. According to Jensen Huang, Nvidia's CEO, no matter what side wins, Nvidia will always benefit from both sides since each of them is creating demand for Nvidia's computer hardware. As he puts it, "Both closed and open models are going to win. They are simultaneously driving our sales." Sacks suggested that the new narrative might shift traditional political views and make even "most conservatives and most libertarians see the threat to civil liberties" in centralised AI and therefore join the side of the open model supporters.
