Andorra: the 50th anniversary of the Meritxell Sanctuary

Piero Pioppo, the Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and Andorra, has warned against «cultural relativism» and «social indifference» in the face of the challenges facing Andorran society. The 50th anniversary of the Meritxell Sanctuary was one of the highlights of the Eucharistic celebration held in Andorra to mark the Feast of Our Lady of Meritxell, the country's patron saint. Piero Pioppo described the anniversary year as a time of «grace and joy», «faith and fidelity to the Christian way of life», as well as a period of service to the country and society. In his sermon, Pioppo also addressed the challenges posed by social change and the international situation, calling on different sectors of society to take «joint action». He warned against «cultural relativism» and «social indifference», while stressing the need to equip children, young people and adults with the tools to face modern challenges and take responsibility. «Families, educational institutions, civil authorities and the Holy Church can work together to provide training that equips children, young people and adults with the tools to address cultural relativism and social indifference, while also enabling them to take responsibility in the face of the many challenges they encounter», Pioppo said. The Nuncio also warned of the consequences that, in his view, certain trends in modern society could have for traditional values. In this context, the Nuncio highlighted the relevance of the teachings of recent pontiffs to the challenges facing society today. He noted that it 'can guide us in the present, teaching us to look beyond the allure of a world that often stifles genuine spiritual and cultural values, wears us down through relentless competition, and breeds selfishness and hostility.' Furthermore, Pioppo referred to the 'culture of death' and contrasted it with the defence of life and human dignity. The topic of the family also featured prominently in his address. Citing Pope Leo XIV, the Nuncio emphasized: «Where the family receives support and accompaniment, a school of relationships, solidarity, closeness, dialogue and hope is formed. But when it is wounded or isolated, society as a whole feels the consequences.» In this regard, he noted that «there are areas of public life and social coexistence that cannot remain in a state of inertia, but instead require attention and protection from those responsible for safeguarding the common good.» Pioppo also highlighted the role Andorra can play beyond its borders, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and dignity, as well as promoting justice.
