It is with immense sadness that I reflect on the passing of Ciara Mageean, one of Ireland's greatest athletes and, more importantly, a truly wonderful person.
Ciara was an inspiration to everyone involved in athletics, from the elite international athlete to the young boy or girl taking their first steps on the track.
Her achievements were extraordinary. To become European 1500m champion in Rome in 2024 was a moment of immense pride for Irish athletics and for the entire nation. Her determination, courage, dedication and never-give-up attitude made her a champion in every sense of the word.

Ciara on her journey in sport had many a set back. I remember coach Jerry Kiernan nursing her back from injury, small steps, long walks, short jogs before re-releasing this great athletics hope from Portaferry.
But beyond the medals, records and championships, it was Ciara herself who made such a lasting impression.
Her infectious smile, warmth, honesty and genuine love of athletics touched so many people.
From an athletics perspective here in Sligo, I always recognise the tremendous influence people like Ciara have on the next generation.

She showed young athletes what can be achieved through hard work, belief, resilience and a passion for what you do.
Ironically New Balance had a campaign called 'giving back' where sponsored athletes got to pick a school and give everyone in a class a brand new pair of runners.
Ciara came here to St Edward's NS and spent the day with the kids and gave everyone in 6th class a brand new pair of runners, the 'giving back' was so perfectly titled for a lady that just gave back so much without even noticing.
Her courage and positivity throughout her illness were an inspiration to us all.

She demonstrated a strength that went far beyond anything that could ever be measured on a running track.
My thoughts are with her husband Tommy, her parents, family, friends and everyone in the athletics community who had the privilege of knowing her.
Ciara may have taken her final lap, but her legacy will live on in every track, every race and every young athlete who dreams of following in her footsteps.
Rest peacefully, Ciara. You made Ireland proud, you inspired a generation, and you will never be forgotten.
God bless
