Futala fountain Nagpur: The 500mm diameter pipeline for treated drinking water being laid near Futala lake for MahaMetro's viewing gallery will also supply water for mist systems installed at the venue. A senior MahaMetro official confirmed that the fresh-water connection being arranged at Futala will be used specifically for the fountain's mist system and not for operating its main water jets. 'The nozzles have very small openings. If Futala lake water is used, impurities can clog the nozzles, leading to frequent cleaning or replacement. So, we need to supply clean water for the mist system,' the official said. The clarification comes amid questions over the purpose of the 500mm pipeline being laid by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) near the viewing gallery. NMC public health engineering department executive engineer Shrikant Waiker said the civic body was executing the water connection work at MahaMetro's request. Sources in the department said the 500mm pipeline would eventually be reduced to around 160mm at the connection point. The larger diameter, they said, is intended to provide the pressure required by the MahaMetro facility. NMC is currently undertaking the interconnection work, after which MahaMetro will apply afresh for a formal water-supply connection. The connection will subsequently be recorded in NMC's records. Project sources said pure water for mist systems would also ensure public safety. The mist breaks water into extremely fine droplets that can drift towards spectators at the viewing gallery. Using untreated lake water could potentially expose visitors to contaminated droplets through inhalation or direct contact. MahaMetro plans to store and supply fresh water separately for the mist systems. In the past, Futala fountain faced technical issues due to lake-water quality. In 2023, algae growth affected underwater electrical wiring, pumps and other equipment. Specialised submersible cables, fountain components and nozzle jets were also affected by pollution, microbial growth and weeds. The fountain is currently undergoing restoration after MahaMetro took over the project. New cables and pump components are being installed following a technical assessment. Fountain restoration work is progressing at the site. Installation of tensile fabric on the artificial banyan tree structure, a key visual element of the fountain revamp plan, is also underway, sources said.
