NEW YORK, New York -The Nasdaq Composite closed at a fresh record high Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell, as President Trump's warning to Iran during his address to the United Nations General Assembly weighed on blue-chip sentiment.
The Nasdaq Composite advanced 122.18 points, or 0.45 percent, to close at 27,244.28 — a new all-time high. The index traded between 27,161.20 and 27,288.79 on the day, with its session high matching its 52-week high of 27,288.79. Its 52-week low stands at 20,690.25.
The Standard and Poor's 500 finished essentially flat, edging up 0.13 points to 7,764.83. Volume was reported at 3.03 billion. The broad index moved between 7,756.26 and 7,782.19 during the session, within a 52-week range of 6,316.91 to 7,816.70.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was the session's laggard, falling 185.03 points, or 0.36 percent, to 51,863.80. Volume totaled 426.219 million. The index traded between 51,726.08 and 52,319.01 on the day, against a 52-week range of 45,057.28 to 54,744.33.
The decline in the Dow came as President Trump, speaking to the UN General Assembly, said he would "annihilate" Iran if it did not reach a deal — remarks that unsettled investors in industrial and blue-chip names.
The split session left Wall Street's major averages diverging: a record close for the tech-heavy Nasdaq, a modest gain for the S&P 500, and a decline for the Dow, as geopolitical tensions stemming from the president's UN remarks offset broader market strength.
Bond yields remained elevated Tuesday as investors and traders contemplated a new round of rate hikes.
"I don't think markets have fully appreciated what a rate hike cycle even with a higher yield environment might mean," Tom Garretson, senior portfolio strategist of fixed income strategies at RBC Wealth Management told CNBC Tuesday.
"I do think there's quite a bit of complacency still priced into markets with respect to the idea that the 10-year yield moves above 5 percent and that there's probably a pretty persistent risk that the Fed could certainly keep raising rates at least two more times and potentially back towards 5 percent into early 2027," he said.
