An astronaut aboard the International Space Station has captured a rare view of the Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, forming high above the Earth's atmosphere. The footage taken from the space station clearly shows bright green and faint purple waves of light dancing just above the Earth. The striking video quickly went viral after it was posted on social media. The users termed it as 'nature's most spectacular masterpiece' and an 'amazing natural sight'. The colourful lights form when charged particles from the Sun collide with the Earth's magnetic field and gases in the atmosphere, including oxygen and nitrogen. The interaction produces the beautiful green and red glow seen in the sky.
