What would a hybrid Dolly/Gloria be like?

Years ago, I was driving on U.S. 95 somewhere south of Grangeville, Idaho. Bored with my small collection of cassette tapes, I turned on the radio and found a country music station. Not my usual fare, but often the only genre available in the rural West. The first song I heard made me laugh. It was Dolly Parton belting out an ode to a former flame—a dude with big ideas and a little behind:Why'd you come in here lookin' like thatIn your high heeled boots and your painted-on jeansAll decked out like a cowgirl's dreamWaltzing right in here lookin' like thatWhy'd you come in here lookin' like thatWhen you could stop traffic in a gunny sack I defy anyone to deliver 'Why'd You Come In Here' like Dolly did, capturing the universal mix of emotions upon seeing an old love. She didn't write those lyrics. But songs she did write are worn into the grooves of minds the world over. 'Jolene,' 'Down from Dover,' 'I Will Always Love You' ... I've read that she composed some 5,000 songs and made more than 1,000 recordings. Dolly was irrepressible, which could also be said of activist Gloria Steinem, the other bright star we lost from the female firmament in recent weeks. Gloria, who died at 92, was of the generation before mine. I only saw her once in person, at a reception, but her spirit was with me as I navigated life, especially young womanhood. When I was in college, her voice influenced my internal debates, which mirrored those of society. Should I have kids if I wanted to a demanding career? If I was faced with an unplanned pregnancy, would I consider abortion? Gloria contended that if you aren't a feminist, you're a masochist. But Dolly demurred when anyone tried to pin the label on her. If she'd ever been accused of being bra-burner, she would probably joke that her generous lingerie would stoke a bonfire. Though she almost certainly would have agreed with Gloria's statement that 'If feminism means anything, it means taking responsibility for ourselves: for our own lives and actions. It is not 'women as victims' but women refusing to be victims.' Dolly personified that approach to living. What would a hybrid of these two women be like?Funny, for sure. A fine interviewee—it's hard to imagine either being at a loss for words. Glamorous. Decisive. Life-embracing. But would this wonder woman be married to one man for decades as Dolly was, or, like Gloria, be found on the arm of a series of smart, accomplished men? Would she be crazy like a fox, like Dolly, or urbane and self-assured as Gloria came across? It's fun to picture Gloria wearing one of Dolly's bouffant wigs or Dolly sporting Gloria's aviator glasses. Dolly was a shrewd businesswoman with a stratospheric income and uncommon generosity. Gloria confessed that, for decades, her intermittent checks for freelance writing left her on a financial edge. While rich in experiences and friendships, she didn't save money until she was 50. It's thanks to women like these that so many of us have been allowed, as Dolly put it, to pour ourselves a cup of ambition. And drink it up.
