Education Minister Reports Decline in Teacher Resignations

Minister of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, Senator Dr Dana Morris Dixon, says the number of teachers resigning this year has declined compared with 2025. Morris Dixon said fewer than 300 teachers submitted resignations between July and August, traditionally the peak period for teacher departures. 'That is less than last year. So we actually have less resignations in the system,' she said. The minister was speaking on Monday during the official opening of the newly established Hydel Cumberland High School at the Cumberland campus in Portmore, St Catherine. Morris Dixon said the ministry is also taking steps to address existing teacher vacancies. She noted that approximately 1,000 trained teachers who have graduated from teachers' colleges are available for deployment to schools across the island. The minister also said protocols have been established to facilitate the return of teachers who are on extended leave, should they choose to resume duties. 'There are many avenues that we have put in place to deal with it. But I think one of the encouraging things is we have less resignations than in previous years,' Morris Dixon reiterated.
