Sheet missing? Blame the middle class

Emma Beddington's article (Why are so many people stealing from restaurants?, 7 September) and her observation that 'our basest instincts are still seemingly awoken by tableware in a hospitality setting' reminded me of a friend's stay at a Catholic retreat centre. The nuns said that working-class guests stole the cutlery – but middle-class ones stole the sheets.
