Rivian Rolls Out RivianOS 2 to All R1 Vehicles in Major 2026.31 Update

Rivian has started deploying update 2026.31 to all R1s. The new features bring software parity with R2 to both generations of the R1. Rivian R1 owners can now access some of the features that R2 owners have been enjoying for a while. The latest updates offer a slew of improvements, from the interface to notifications. According to Rivian, update 2026.31, contained in RivianOS 2, is powered by its Rivian Unified Intelligence AI. While this means greater demand on computing hardware, Rivian states that latency is limited thanks to hybrid edge computing and local AI capabilities. In addition, the features are customised based on the hardware configuration of each model. One of the highlights is better graphics, thanks to Unreal Engine 5, which handles real-time 3D rendering. Rivian, however, is preserving Unreal Engine 4 on Gen 1 to prevent display lag. The updated graphics compute means R1s can render the vehicle and its surroundings on the central display in 3D in real time, making for a more intuitive presentation of information. Rivian has also moved things around in the settings. Drivers can now position frequently used controls, including the media player, on any side of the screen. They also have a new vertical status bar that lets them access key vehicle functions. Search also got an update, which, combined with the adaptive control layout, makes it easier to locate settings items. As part of the latest update, drivers can now find alerts about police presence and speed cameras in the in-vehicle navigation system. Rivian relies on multiple sources for these data, including local authorities, Google Maps, and the Waze platform. For Rivian customers who subscribe to Connect+, update 2026.31 brings weather info, including forecasts and air quality readings, through a separate app. Another feature, dubbed Mobile Live Trips, pushes trip updates to the mobile app. Finally, R1 owners can now set their own wake-words to make vehicle to start listening for voice commands. Other controls include limiting location sharing and moving driver profiles across vehicle generations.
