The Takoma Park-Silver Spring Food Co-op (TPSS Co-op) is moving forward with plans to open a second store in the region and is launching a $2.4 million member investment campaign to help fund the expansion.
The member-owned natural foods grocery store, founded in 1981 as a small vegetarian storefront, now has 11,500 member-owners. A location and opening timeline for the second store were not included in the announcement.
According to the Co-op, its Board of Representatives is advancing the project following years of discussion and feasibility studies. The expansion is intended to bring the cooperative model to a new community, increase sales, and create operational efficiencies that support the business's long-term financial health.
The Grow Local Member Investment Campaign launches Tuesday, September 8, inviting member-owners to invest in the expansion through the purchase of non-voting stock shares. The Co-op aims to raise $2.4 million through the campaign.
'Every dollar we spend or invest is a choice about what we want our economy to look like,' said Orly Keiner, TPSS Co-op Board President. 'We want people to have the opportunity to put their money toward a business they believe in, in a community they care about, with values they share.'
TPSS Co-op emphasizes local and organic foods, socially and environmentally responsible products, and access to nutritious groceries at a range of price points. The business also supports community efforts to reduce food insecurity.
More information about the expansion and member investment campaign is available on the TPSS Co-op website.
