Andrew Garfield, the British-American actor best known for playing Spider-Man, has opened up about something he hopes will change in his personal life. At the age of 42, he admitted he is 'not entirely proud' of being childless. He also expressed that having children and starting a family is something he would love in the future.
Garfield spoke about becoming a father while reflecting on his role in The Magic Faraway Tree. The film explores how children are affected by technology and screens, which also made the actor think about the importance of family, nature and childhood.
In an interview on the SmartLess podcast, which was recorded before his 43rd birthday, Garfield said:
'I'm 42 and I'm childless and I'm not entirely proud of that.'
He continued, 'Like, I would love I would love to have kids. I would love to start a family.'
Garfield shared the thoughts while discussing his role in The Magic Faraway Tree, a film that explores the impact of technology and screens on children. He said the movie focuses on reconnecting children with family, nature and their own imagination.
'It's about, you know, getting kids back in touch with themselves, with each other, with nature, with their own nature, with the family unit, with community.'
For him, making the movie also became a personal experience.
'There was something very sweet about making this film and having my friends who have young kids come [and] see it. And it was like the best reviews I've ever had in my life.'
Garfield has been dating actress Monica Barbaro since early 2025, with the pair confirming their romance at Wimbledon last summer. The actor is also set to star in The Uprising, a historical film about the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England.
Garfield first gained wider attention with films including Never Let Me Go and The Social Network. Then he became a worldwide star as Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel.
For now, though, Garfield's comments about fatherhood offer a much more personal glimpse into what he hopes his future will look like.
