Ivey salutes 'hardworking men and women' in Labor Day message

Governor Kay Ivey released a video message to Alabamians on Monday, praising the working men and women across the state, as Alabamians celebrate the unofficial end of summer and the start of the college football season. While the state undoubtedly has many more days of heat ahead, Labor Day signals the end of summer for many. This year, the long weekend also coincided with the first games in the much-anticipated college football season. And since the state's two leading football colleges won their respective opening games, the Monday off work is a bonus on top of a successful weekend. While most know little to nothing about the history of the federal holiday known as Labor Day, with its deep roots in the broader socialist and labor unionist movements in post-industrial America, most are content to enjoy an extra day's reprieve from their daily toils. Ivey's message applauds the Alabama worker, giving credit to the working spirit of Alabama, which she exclaims is "alive and well." "The strength of America has always lived in the hardworking men and women who rise each morning determined to build a brighter future," Ivey said. "Here in Alabama, that spirit is alive and well." "From our factories and farms to our classrooms and construction sites, hardworking Alabamians continue to prove that there is no substitute for an honest day's work. Today, we honor you.
