Punjab is preparing a new concept-based curriculum for students in Grades 1 to 5 aimed at improving their academic abilities, creativity and practical understanding, District Education Officer (Primary Women) Dr Hajra Shaheen said on Tuesday.
Speaking to the media, Dr Shaheen said the new curriculum would shift the focus away from rote learning towards understanding, observation, questioning, analysis and problem-solving.
She said educational concepts would be taught through activities to make learning more engaging and effective, with the content tailored to students' age, mental capacity and learning needs.

Under the new approach, students would have greater opportunities to learn through observation, practical experiences and classroom activities instead of simply memorising textbook material.
Dr Shaheen said teachers would also assume a more active role by involving students in classroom activities, asking questions, seeking their views and encouraging them to observe and draw conclusions independently.
Teacher training would form an important part of the new system, she added, enabling educators to adopt modern teaching techniques and better understand activity- and concept-based learning.

The new curriculum would also seek to reduce unnecessary academic pressure by making learning material simpler and more age-appropriate.
According to Dr Shaheen, progress had been made towards making the Grades 1 to 5 curriculum shorter, simpler and aligned with modern educational requirements. Textbooks based on the revised curriculum would be prepared and published for the 2027-28 academic session.
She stressed that strengthening children's educational foundations at the primary level was essential, as learning habits and understanding developed during the early grades had a lasting impact on their future academic performance.

Punjab is also working on other initiatives to modernise education, including a plan to introduce artificial intelligence education at the primary level from the 2027-28 academic session, she added.
Dr Shaheen expressed hope that the new curriculum and modern teaching methods would provide government school students with higher-quality, purposeful and practical education. Tags:
