AS emerging technologies reshape economies and redefine the world of work, digitalization has become essential for countries seeking sustainable economic growth. For Pakistan, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), automation and digital systems offers an opportunity to improve productivity, strengthen exports and create new employment avenues for its growing youth population. The challenge, however, lies in translating technological potential into practical initiatives that deliver measurable economic & social benefits.
Chairing a meeting on Wednesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, directed the relevant ministries to complete key initiatives under Pakistan's collaboration with Chinese technology giant Alibaba by November and submit a progress report. The directions cover AI-assisted cancer detection, specialized training for IT graduates, digital monitoring of the petroleum supply chain and measures to promote exports. The collaboration with Alibaba offers opportunities to connect Pakistani businesses with the international market and equip young professionals with skills relevant to the digital economy. The proposed 15-day AI training programme for IT graduates, alongside a two-year initiative to help small and medium enterprises access e-commerce, training and overseas markets, could support entrepreneurship and generate employment. A dedicated Pakistan Pavilion on Alibaba's website can also provide local businesses with greater international visibility.AI-based agricultural models, farm automation and digital export platforms for citrus fruit and olives can improve efficiency and help farmers reach new markets. Similarly, digital verification of trade documents can facilitate business transactions, while AI and business intelligence tools can improve petroleum supply chain monitoring. Such applications can reduce inefficiencies, strengthen transparency and support better decision-making across sectors. However, the success of these initiatives will depend on effective execution rather than announcements alone. Ministries must meet deadlines, coordinate their efforts and establish measurable indicators of progress. Investment in digital infrastructure, research, education and technical training is equally important to ensure that the benefits of technological advancement reach businesses and communities across the country. Pakistan's young population represents a significant resource for economic transformation, provided it receives the right skills and opportunities. Emerging technologies can enable young people to secure better employment, establish technology-based businesses and compete in international markets. The ultimate objective must be to make technology a driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
