Iran says diplomatic efforts underway to revive Islamabad MoU

Iran's Interior Ministry spokesperson Ali Zeinivand has said diplomatic efforts are underway to bring the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States back on track. Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Zeinivand said diplomatic and international mediation efforts were continuing to resolve outstanding issues and facilitate the return to the Islamabad agreement. Zeinivand said Tehran wants the other party to return to the memorandum of understanding it signed and fulfil its commitments under the agreement. 'Diplomatic efforts are underway to ensure that the other party returns to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding,' he said, adding that Iran expects the United States to adhere to the commitments made under the agreement. The spokesperson said various countries are also working to facilitate diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States as attempts continue to resolve differences. Iran says MoU approved at highest level Zeinivand acknowledged that there have been disagreements within Iran regarding the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. However, he stressed that the document represents a decision adopted by the Iranian state. He said the memorandum had been approved by the Supreme National Security Council and confirmed by Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, making it an official decision of the Iranian state. 'The Iranian side has clearly stated that the other party should return to the memorandum of understanding it signed itself,' Zeinivand said. The Iranian Interior Ministry spokesperson also pointed to ongoing diplomatic activity involving President Masoud Pezeshkian as part of efforts to address the dispute. Zeinivand said active diplomacy was continuing through the president's participation in the Shanghai and BRICS meetings in India and Kyrgyzstan, along with intensive consultations. He said these diplomatic contacts were part of broader efforts to resolve outstanding issues and facilitate a return to the Islamabad agreement. Islamabad MoU followed US-Iran conflict The Islamabad MoU emerged after the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran that began on February 28, when US and Israeli forces carried out military airstrikes against Iran following a lack of concrete progress between Washington and Tehran over Iran's nuclear programme. Iran subsequently launched missile and drone attacks against Israeli and US targets in the region. Pakistan mediated efforts between the two sides, leading to a ceasefire agreement on April 7. The Islamabad MoU was later signed electronically by the United States and Iran in June, with Pakistan playing a mediating role. The memorandum set out a framework covering the cessation of military operations, diplomatic negotiations and other measures intended to move the two sides toward a broader agreement.
